FNV
The FNV (Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging) is the largest trade union in the Netherlands. The FNV consists of a multi-sector association and thirteen affiliated independent unions, with a total of over 1 million members. This makes the FNV the largest Dutch trade union federation. Within the FNV, a specific and temporary project team has been set up to explore a new field of activity. This project team has been freed up full-time and now consists of nine people from various sectors. When putting together the project team, diversity in terms of talent, knowledge and experience was also taken into account.
The project team indicated that they wanted to make a good start, in which it was important that all the proverbial noses in the field of project management be pointed in the same direction. Based on this, project leader Reinier Stroo asked Improven to facilitate the team with a tailor-made training course Pragmatic Project Management. The aim was to deliver a high-quality and widely supported project plan and to share knowledge, skills and experience in the field of projects and change with the team.
"The added value is mainly in combining the training with theoretical and practical insights and working directly on the delivery of the project plan"
Our approach
The total programme consisted of 5 days of training, including a Lego Serious Play workshop and a return day. Together with Improven's trainers, the project team started working on the topics that are important to give a good interpretation of project management within the FNV, fitting the project's purpose and the organisation.
During the training days and subsequent homework sessions, focused work was done on the project plan, with issues such as planning, risk mapping, stakeholder management, the business case and, of course, celebrating successes on the agenda. To support this, videos, gaming, discussion and joint sessions were used to flesh out parts of the project plan. All this combined in a form of hybrid project management, ensuring sufficient flexibility, agility and also a grip on issues such as planning and decision-making.
Result
Through the team's commitment and interplay with the trainers, the process has been successful to date. The added value lies mainly in the combination of the training with theoretical and practical insights and working directly on the delivery of the project plan. The result is a solid and, above all, widely supported result, with which the internal project owner is also very satisfied. Tips given during the training days were regularly put into practice immediately and, in addition, the training contributed to team building. This is also evident from comments made by participants during the evaluation moments (conclusion of each training day):
- "The training strengthened collaboration within the project team"
- "The method is very practical and it's nice that we can bring in from practice."
- "It's nice that it's not just about theory and that we are mostly doing."
