National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate (RDI)
The National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate (RDI) is a government agency responsible for a securely connected Netherlands. This means that the RDI enforces laws and regulations on the availability and reliability of the digital infrastructure.
The RDI deals with issues such as why don't I have coverage here, isn't my baby monitor bugged, can I safely transfer money on this site and is a litre of petrol at the pump really a litre? As an organisation, the RDI faces the challenge of better designing (or shaping) information-driven and risk-based monitoring using data. Like most organisations, the RDI notices that there are several aspects in the areas of structure, process and culture that can be improved to become even more data-driven.
This interview was conducted with Jorg Melchers, consultant business IT at Improven.
As a data analyst, Jorg is engaged in facilitating the above socially relevant work using data. His task is to be the link between the developer and the business, and to optimise and professionalise both the front- and backend of our information products.
In the data analyst role, Jorg is responsible for collecting, analysing and interpreting data to gain valuable insights. One of his first tasks has been to develop two dashboards to provide insight into data quality. With automatic data quality checks, RDI is able to check data quality from both internal and external sources. This is a tailor-made solution that integrates seamlessly with the infrastructure. As a result, the RDI has a tool that is used to start the conversation with the business. The devised solution offers flexibility to adapt the system to changing needs.
Therefore, one of the most important aspects of this role is that you will act as a bridge between the developer and the business. Thus, you will work closely with the developer to ensure that the technical solutions being developed match the needs and objectives of the RDI. By understanding the requirements of the business and translating them into technical specifications, it is possible to deliver effective and efficient solutions that add value to the organisation.
In addition, Jorg is spearheading the epic 'managing information products', an ambitious project through which they aim to optimise and professionalise both the front- and backend of information products. The epic focuses on improving user experience, simplifying data processing and implementing advanced analysis and reporting capabilities. As the initiator of this epic, you will work closely with various stakeholders within RDI to define the objectives, set the scope and monitor progress.
This includes organising knowledge sessions highlighting data visualisation and its importance in communicating insights and decision-making based on data. Moreover, Jorg contributed to the co-development of a serious game that strengthens employees' understanding and skills in data-driven working.
Collaboration and knowledge sharing are highly valued at RDI. Jorg works closely with various colleagues, including developers, data scientists and colleagues from the business. Through regular meetings, workshops and brainstorming sessions, the RDI strives to jointly develop and implement the best possible solutions. Jorg's work for the RDI on data quality, the professionalisation of dashboards as well as thinking along with processes and data awareness help the RDI take steps in data-driven work.
