A day in the life of Young IMPROVEN consultant Bas

Young IMPROVEN offers young talents the opportunity to seize professional opportunities and kick-start their careers. IMPROVEN has put together an intensive development programme especially for starting consultants, which combines professional and skills training with working on assignments. There are three tracks within the programme: Business, Finance and Data Consulting, giving young professionals the opportunity to develop and specialise in the field that suits them best.

Who is Bas?

After studying Commercial Economics at Windesheim and a master's degree in Marketing Analytics & Data Science at the RUG, Bas decided to explore the world first. Through a friend, he heard about IMPROVEN. The positive stories and a look at the website made him curious. After several pleasant conversations, it felt right away: “I got an offer and didn't have to think long about it.” Since March 2025, Bas has been a Young IMPROVEN consultant, going through the Data Consulting process.

Client brief: from data to strategy

After a period of internal assignments and introductions, Bas started a project at a funeral home. His assignment? Helping the company to become more data-driven. “It was a real business intelligence assignment. There was a proliferation of reports and a lot of gains to be made in terms of data quality.” Together with a senior colleague, Bas structured, analysed and developed new reports. The best part? “The management and MT now make strategic decisions based on insights we provide. So we are really making an impact.”

Bas and his colleague were the link between an external IT company and the business at the funeral home. “The client was not used to this organisational structure, but it was precisely this interplay that made the work fun and dynamic.” In addition, it was a technically interesting assignment, Bas explains. “You're in the clay, so to speak: you build dashboards in Power BI, dive into data engineering and translate technology into actionable insights for the customer.”

Learning and developing together

Besides his client assignment, there is room to take up other (internal) projects. For example, together with another Young IMPROVEN consultant, Bas built an app in Powerapps, focusing on project management. “It's a technically complex project. That makes it challenging. In addition, IMPROVEN is now implementing this app at several clients and it's cool to see how our work is paying off.”

Bas also did a consultancy assignment with a Young IMPROVEN team for a voluntary organisation. “We mapped all the processes and then wrote a framework so that the volunteers” two systems could communicate properly with each other." In short, Bas has already worked on different projects and for different organisations in a short time, this makes his work varied and instructive.

Day in the life of

Besides a regular day at the client's office, Bas schedules his days himself. “I like to go to IMPROVEN's office on Fridays, when there is a nice bustle,” he says. During the week, he also attends (professional) training courses at IMPROVEN's office, where he and his colleagues have dinner together that day. “The combination of soft skills and technical skills makes the trainings very interesting for me. In doing so, it is also always sociable.”

His motivation for working at IMPROVEN, besides the fun and challenging assignments? “You really feel part of the team. With all the activities, the sociability in the office and the nice colleagues, the close-knit team feeling is strong.”

To sum up, for Bas, every day is different, instructive and, above all, connected, which is exactly why he is glad he chose IMPROVEN.
