HOSHIN KANRI

Description

Hoshin stands for 'direction' or 'compass' and Kanri stands for 'control' or 'management'. It is a management technique where decisions and actions contribute (in)directly to the organisation's strategic goals.

When

At the discharge stage.

Goals

Controlling actions and decisions so that they are in line with the strategic goals. Furthermore, the aim is to involve everyone so that it is widely supported. Lastly, it is about having a good 'picture' of the current status and the right capacity allocation.

 Steps

  1. Define the organisation's mission, vision and values. Furthermore, associated KPIs and benchmarks are important.
  2. Set long-term goals (next three to five years).
  3. Set annual targets.
  4. Describe what needs to change top-down to achieve long-term goal X (departments, teams and individual).
  5. Implement annual targets with support from Hoshin Kanri software, for example.
  6. Organise monthly reviews.
  7. Conduct annual audits to see what has been achieved and whether annual targets can still be met.

Tips:

  • Provide training so that the approach is clear and what people can expect.
  • Involve the whole team.
  • Select milestones or targets carefully and discuss this frequently.
  • Make use of supported software.
  • Make sure goals are aligned and the right incentive is in place.
