Data Excellence IMPROVING - How do I get value from my data?

The fact that organisations have huge amounts of valuable data already needs no explanation these days. We have known for a long time that data is potentially a very valuable asset of an organisation, but still few organisations treat it this way. In strategic plans, data and data-driven working are often an important topic, but in the DNA of the organisation there is sometimes very little of that. This is mainly because organisations struggle with the question: HOW can we get the potential out of our data?

IMPROVEN's Data Excellence team has gained extensive experience at top organisations and has built up a broad theoretical base. For example, our consultants are Certified Data Management Professionals with DAMA International. We use this knowledge and experience to help organisations extract the untapped potential from their data. We focus on the business value of data. In addition, IMPROVEN focuses on four areas of expertise. These areas of expertise are crucial for any organisation that wants to achieve success with its data strategy.

1. Data governance

To achieve stable success with a data strategy, setting up data governance is indispensable. Data governance ensures a better grip on the often enormous amount of data in the organisation. It provides insight into what data exists and ensures that this data is accurate, reliable, secure and meaningful. It also ensures that data is used and processed ethically and in line with laws and regulations. IMPROVEN helps set up processes, policies, standards, organisational structure and technologies to ensure this. For this, the organisational context is scrutinised and advice is provided based on proven methods that are well aligned with the organisation's ambition. IMPROVEN does not stop at providing advice. Our data specialists embed the advice in operations and ensure a low management burden by automating as much as possible.

 2. Data quality

Data governance describes how high quality data is ensured. To achieve this, good data quality must be ensured. Good data quality is prerequisite if an organisation wants to get value from its data, yet it is not an end in itself. It is important that data is ''fit for purpose' is. High-quality data reduces risks, reduces costs and improves organisational efficiency and productivity by eliminating the need to fix errors and making decisions based on correct data. IMPROVEN helps organisations by performing a baseline measurement on data quality, by drawing up a roadmap for improvements, by drawing up and securing KPIs regarding data quality and by optimising and securing data quality processes.

 3. Business Intelligence

Ultimately, the aim is to use the high-quality data for valuable insights that allow organisations to make the right decisions. Business Intelligence (BI) can be used for this purpose. With BI, business data is collected, analysed and reported in dashboards. Reporting focuses on what happened. Dashboards (and BI) try to answer the question why something happened. Linking data from multiple sources can reveal cause-and-effect relationships that may not have been known before. Proper interaction and good design of visualisations is very important when designing dashboards. IMPROVEN's BI consultants make a difference by helping organisations make the step from reporting to Business Intelligence.

4. Data Science

The goal of Data Science is to gain even better insights from data. Compared to Business Intelligence, Data Science focuses more on future insights, making predictions as accurate as possible. To do so, data scientists use a variety of programming skills, statistical knowledge, sector and organisational knowledge and make use of both structured data and/or unstructured data. IMPROVEN is preferred supplier in the fields of data engineering, data analysis, data science and data modelling at various ministries. For example, we contribute greatly to machine learning projects at government agencies and various organisations in the private sector.

Conclusion

Having a data organisation in place including high-quality data management with reliable reports and insights offers many benefits. For example, an organisation can:

  1. Extracting value from data
  2. Reduce management costs and risks
  3. Being compliant and in control
  4. Increase productivity
  5. Making better decisions

In short, data can be used as a value-adding tool for your organisation.
